Sorry for the reupload (Meago posted it a while back, but this is the first time I've posted it myself), I needed to test dA's video playback in this format for when my long video is ready.

Drawn by meago, animation and character by me (SnowSultan). Play in 720p for best quality. Hope it doesn't stutter for you like the Flash one apparently did and thanks for viewing!

That's an awesome animation :)
What tools/SW did you use for it?

Thank you! Meago drew it in Paint Tool Sai (as far as I know), I used After Effects to animate it.

Thanks ^_^
I looked at the features it offers and its motion capture looks neat.
Did you use that feature in the animation, or you set it all manually?

I animated it manually, but it isn't hard. Most animation software works similarly, you mark a "keyframe" on a timeline whenever something either moves or stops, then you reposition whatever it is and then you create another keyframe to tell it to stop. I separated that figure into a couple of pieces so each could have their own keyframes and move independently. The real challenge with animation isn't so much doing it, as doing it well.   :)

There are at least two other programs that can do similar things for PC (actually many more for Mac); Fusion (which is free but quite difficult) and Motion Artist (which is $49 and I've heard mixed reviews for).

The "challenge isn't so much doing it, as doing it well" is very true also for drawing ^_^
I got Motion Artist together with Manga Studio when they had some special action. I got the Motion Artist for $5 or $10 only at that time. :excited:
The Motion Artist is rather just about moving a static layer around the scene. You can make an ordinary manga a bit more interesting with it by adding the movement to the layers, but advanced animation seems to be out of its reach. I'd say it's not for creating an anime, but rather for fancier manga.

There's however Anime Studio from the same company, and that is already for more proper animation (with bones, etc.) than Motion Artist. But I don't have that one.

I looked for the price of the After Effects, but all I can find is a subscription payment hmm

Ah, that's a good deal then. Manga Studio is the best drawing program I've ever used, it's far better than even Photoshop for actually drawing.

I kinda want Motion Artist because I don't have any software for making motion comics (which is what it's mainly used for). After Effects can do it too, but it's complicated and I don't have it anymore because as you noticed, it is subscription-only now and I wouldn't use it nearly enough to justify the payments (I had it for a year and used it once).

I used an early version of Anime Studio, and while it *could* work for animations like the one I did, I found it clunky and I could do a similar job within Photoshop. I honestly don't know what else to recommend besides maybe Fusion, but I also found that difficult to use (mostly because it's node-based).

Yup, the Manga Studio is great. I am just missing in it an export to SVG (vector format). Everything created in it, regardles being it on raster or vector layer, is rasterized in the end :crying: rvmp

For Motion Artist I can only advice to be on guard and keep checking their site. They may have a sale off again for some good price.

And many thanks for your information about the pros and cons of the various animation software. It was very helpful Hug

The first time I drew with vector lines on a Cintiq in Manga Studio and was able to tweak them afterwards to get a face shape just right, I felt like humanity had achieved the pinnacle of artistic technology.   ;)

Very sorry I don't have any other recommendations for After Effects alternates. If I did, I'd probably own it myself already. Thanks very much!

Thanks! I plan on putting this sort of animation in the movie so it won't just be still pictures panning around. Hopefully it'll be as cute.   :)

I like that too, thanks! Three frames of animation does it well, eyes open, eyes closed, and one frame inbetween.  :)
